Holiday Cottages in Hamstreet Kent

The village of Hamstreet, together with the parishes of Orlestone and Warehorne, are situated 6 miles south of Ashford between the rolling Kentish Hills and the flatlands of the Romney Marshes. Traditional weather boarded buildings and lovely views across the marshes make the village well worth a visit. Three footpaths pass through the village, one following the Royal Military Canal which runs 28 miles from Folkestone to Hastings, The Saxon Shore Way through the great expanse of Hamstreet Woods and the Greensand Way which starts in the village centre and runs 110 miles to Haselmere in Surrey.

The small hamlet of Orlestone on the outskirts of Hamstreet has a village centre designated an attractive Conservation Area and is also the home of Orlestone Forest, now owned by the Forestry Commission and a real mecca for walkers and cyclists. The 11th Century Parish Church of St Mary on top of the hill is a lovely place from which to view the surrounding countryside.

The villages claim to fame is that it was well known by HE Bates who wrote The Darling Buds of May, a story of traditional Kentish country life. The village was once featured on a set of postage stamps in map form, issued to commemorate 200 years of the Ordnance Survey, whose first publication was a map of the area nearby.
