St Leonards on Sea lies to the west of the seaside town of Hastings, just a short walk along the promenade. Originally an old fishing village, St. Leonard's suddenly found itself at the centre of a tourist boom during the 19th century after builder James Burton decided to create a smaller version of Brighton. Many wealthier people were encouraged to visit and appreciate the healthy benefits of the sea and sea air.
