The beautiful house and gardens at Great Dixter (5 miles), once the home of the gardening writer Christopher Lloyd, are well worth a visit for the horticulturally-minded. Alternatively, take a drive to the historic village of Battle (6 miles), named for the famous battle of 1066 where you can visit the ruined Abbey of St Martin and enjoy a stroll around the shops and restaurants.
