This idyllic thatched barn is surrounded by woodland in a quiet corner of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Sleeping four guests, the property is perfect for couples or small families looking to switch off and reconnect with nature, whilst also being ideally placed to enjoy many of the area’s top visitor attractions. Wander into Northiam (1.5 miles), where you’ll find a village that’s rich in history, with picturesque cottages and historic buildings. From here, you can take boat rides on the River Rother or hop on the steam train to majestically chug through the Rother Valley to nearby Tenterden or Bodiam. Great Dixter House and Gardens (1 mile) is within walking distance of the cottage and is a lovely spot for a quiet picnic. As the former home of celebrated gardener Christopher Lloyd, the garden is awash with colour whatever the season, and there is also a nursery where you can pick up a few mementos from your holiday to take home to your own garden.
Enter the property into the hallway where there’s ample space to store your coats and boots. From here, move into the spectacular open-plan lounge/diner, where exposed beams adorn the walls and an impressive vaulted ceiling offers a sense of grandeur. Vast floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light and provide beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. In one corner of the room, comfortable seating is arranged around a roaring wood burner, creating the perfect cosy spot to snuggle up after a day of exploring. In the centre of the room is a large, wooden dining table, where you can enjoy memorable mealtimes with your nearest and dearest. As well as this open-plan living space, there is also an additional lounge with a sofa bed and armchairs, where you can spend a few quiet moments reading the paper or sipping your morning coffee. Also on the ground floor is a sleek kitchen with stylish units and a tiled floor, as well as a handy utility room housing the fridge/freezer and washing machine. Two staircases lead from the central hall to the first floor. On the first floor, you’ll find a galleried mezzanine with comfortable seating – another place to enjoy some quiet time with a book or listening to music. The two bedrooms on this floor offer flexible accommodation, with king-size beds that can be made up as twin bedrooms on request. Both bedrooms have en-suite facilities.
Outside, you’ll find a south-facing terrace, where you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the Sussex sunshine. This area is fully enclosed. There is also a BBQ so you can spend evenings under the stars, sharing great food and catching up with friends. As well as the terrace, you are also welcome to explore the owner’s surrounding gardens and woodlands – the perfect place for an early morning stroll, listening to the birds singing in the trees and working up an appetite for breakfast. Use of the owners swimming pool is available, by arrangement, between May and September.
