Property code: BT079

This fascinating converted railway carriage offers stylish, light and airy accommodation throughout for a quirky getaway in Britain’s only ‘desert’. A dog walkers, artist’s and bird watchers paradise.

This converted railway carriage is found at the unique seaside location of Dungeness. Known as England’s only desert, Dungeness is strangely beautiful and often attracts photographers on high-end fashion shoots, thanks to its stunning light qualities. There is also an abundance of wildlife here and it will suit nature lovers and walkers as much as keen photographers. The lighthouse is open to the public on certain days each month and offers great views out to sea. Also nearby is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a great day out and you can even see the steam trains go past from the property’s decked area.

The main door to this 1880s railway carriage is to the side of the property and opens into a hallway area for storing boots, etc. The washing machine is also here, as is the property’s original water pump. The property’s living area is light and airy, perfectly in keeping with the surroundings. It has a large comfortable sofa, chair and woodburner, as well as a TV and radio. From here there are beautiful views across the shingle beach with the sea beyond. Stepping through the carriage’s original door will bring you to the kitchen, with all its modern appliances, including electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. There is also seating for four at the dining table, or on sunny days open the bi-fold doors and enjoy meals out on the decked area. Leading off the lounge is the master bedroom, which has a double bed and a walk-in wardrobe. It also benefits from a seating area in the window. The second bedroom has a single cabin-style bed which easily converts to a double, there is also a telescope in here, and the unpolluted Dungeness skies make stargazing here a fascinating experience. The bright bathroom has a shower over the bath. Please note that height is restricted in certain areas of the property.

Step outside this property and straight into the stunning nature reserve. There is a decked area with table and chairs, which leads directly onto the shingle and, to the rear of the property, an original railway bench from Dungeness station. Parking is available for two cars.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

  • Two bedrooms – One double, one single cabin bed that can be converted to a double
  • One bathroom
  • Microwave, dishwasher, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and cafetiere
  • Woodburner
  • Please note in parts the ceilings are lower than a standard house ceiling
  • Off-street parking for several cars
  • Wi-Fi available
  • Regret no smoking
  • One small dog welcome
  • Washing machine
  • Direct access to the beach
  • Travel cot and high chair

We loved our short stay at Stonihoe. Beautiful, wild and felt like an adventure. The carriage is really well stocked (even had a hair dryer).

Our 2nd visit was just as great as our first. A quirky 'cottage' that perfectly fits the surroundings. Welcoming pack of wine, crisps and biscuits hits the mark. Cosy and warm on the cold days and fabulous and fresh when doors are opened on sunny days. Chill and relax is the order of the day here.

Stonihoe is located right in the heart of Dungeness, a minute from the sea, old lighthouse and the steam railway. Great cabin and location. It is well stocked. For us, the stay would have improved if both beds were not uncomfortable and larger. The cabin is looking very tired and does need updating, we also had issues with ants and it could have been cleaner.

Overall I found Stonihoe a sweet, endearing place with much history linked to it . I was very appreciative of the owner sending me a voicemail message to check that everything was ok and to use her as the contact if need be. ( during Covid no phone contact was available re the Agents ) Pleasant accommodation and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Dungeness was beautiful, however we were horrified to find the kitchen and our bedroom overrun with ants. The hoover didn't work until I repaired it so it took ages to Hoover them up. The majority of the cottage has a low ceiling and door height, especially in the bathroom, if you are over 6' 7" you will not be able to stand up in the shower!
