Holiday cottages and self-catering accommodation in Lewes

Lewes is one of England’s most enchanting towns, full of history and mystique. Nestled into the beautiful South Downs, and only ten miles from the coast, this pretty town allows you to be close to both nature and sea. There are hundreds of beautiful walks across the Downs where spectacular chalk hills look over the sea towards France and down towards the various towns and villages in its shadow.

Home to the Battle of Lewes in 1264, the town still offers a multitude of historical places to visit including Lewes Castle, the remains of Lewes Priory and Anne of Cleaves House, the latter a gift to Anne from Henry VIII. Home to one of the oldest bookshops in the country, the Fifteenth Century Bookshop, you will really feel that you have stepped back in time. There is a public art trail around the town with many beautiful sculptures and pieces of art to enjoy and lots of quirky shops and little restaurants and cafes to sample the local cuisine.

Try to go when the area hosts two of its most famous events - the famous Lewes Bonfire and Carnival in November and the opera at Glyndebourne during the summer. The cosmopolitan city of Brighton is only a half an hour drive away and makes a brilliant day or evening out for those who need a bit of sparkle!
