This delicacy comes into its own during the annual Oyster Festival, when thousands of visitors from all over the world descend on this seaside town. Whitstable harbour is a great place to watch fishing boats returning with their catch, and you can sample some of the freshly caught shellfish from one of the stalls dotted along the seafront. The town’s vast stretch of shingle beach is lined with colourful beach huts and is perfect for long walks and sunset swims.

For those who like a little bit of history and culture, the 18th century castle and gardens are well worth a visit and there is a strong arts culture in the town. Make sure you visit the tiny narrow alleyways in the centre which stretch down to the sea. Convenient escape routes for smugglers of the illegal tobacco and spirit trade, they are now famous landmarks, especially Squeeze Gut Alley.
