The Isle of Thanet is no longer an island in the traditional sense; it was once surrounded by water in ancient times. Nowadays it has reconnected with the mainland. The most easterly point of Kent, the Isle of Thanet is home to three major seaside resorts: Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate. For a quieter waterside venture try out Minnis Bay, Stone Bay, Dumpton Gap, West Bay, or St Mildreds. Cyclists and trekkers rejoice, as the Viking Trail (32 miles) is a wonderful addition to the nation’s most pleasant long distance trails. Isle of Thanet events include the Margate Masters, which attracts Britain's best beach volleyball teams, and Margate’s Beach Motorcross, a hugely popular adrenaline-fuelled event.
