Holiday cottages and self-catering accommodation in Battle

In 1066, one of the most famous battles of all time occurred in Sussex, the Battle of Hastings. A fierce and bloody meeting between the Normans, led by William the Conqueror, and the Saxons, led by King Harold, would resound through the centuries and nearly 1000 years later it’s still one of the best known fights in the history of Britain.

Today, visitors can still visit the site of the famous clash which is close to the town of Battle. People travel there for its wealth of historic places of interest to discover. The battlefield and Battle Abbey are major highlights for anybody visiting the area.

The altar of Battle Abbey is said to be built on the spot King Harold fell in combat. Another attraction in the town is the popular interactive exhibition, ‘1066: The Battle for England’. It’s here that visitors can feel how heavy a warrior’s shield is, or wear some chain mail and then marvel at how far these soldiers walked to battle carrying such combat apparel. There’s an auditorium showing a filmed recreation of the fight too, so make sure you include a trip to the ‘Experience’ on your holiday itinerary.

With all the historical wonder, it’s almost possible to forget about the actual town of Battle, which is a pleasant town with a good selection of places to eat and useful shops. It’s within decent driving distance of Hastings, Eastbourne, Rye and Camber Sands if you fancy a trip out of town.
